Travel, and Classes, and Adventure. Oh my!
This past summer Erin Hayes studied abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa through UGA's School of Public and International Affairs study abroad program Globis. Erin went with 26 other UGA students and lived in Stellenbosch for about 4 weeks attending classes at Stellenbosch University. Her program mainly focused on education, crime rates, household statistics and income. After class every day, they went to an after school program in the Kayamandi Township to tutor kids. This is one of the poorest areas in the country. Erin loved being able to connect with the kids every day and watch them grow in their education through tutoring. When asked Erin about her trip she said, “this trip was so amazing because we got to see and experience opportunities that would probably never be presented to us again.” Along with classes and the afterschool tutoring program, the students were able to go on weekend excursions. Erin got to see Table Mountain, go to Robin Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned), visit Soweto (the largest township in SA), see the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, go to Cape Town, cage dive with great white sharks, travel to Zimbabwe and Botswana, ride elephants, walk with lions, go on river cruises and game rides, and even bungee jump over Victoria Falls. Kappa Delta is so proud of Erin and cannot wait to hear about her study abroad experience in Italy this spring semester!
