ALL COFFEE, ALL THE TIME
Devon Altman, a member of Sigma Delta Tau, shares some of her and her sisters’ favorite coffeeshops in Athens:
As you enter college, you quickly learn to love, or love-hate, coffee. Whether it’s to caffeinate you after a long night studying, an afternoon pick me up, or a fun coffee date with one of your best friends to catch up - coffee is something that brings people together. Here are some of my, and my sorority sisters’, favorite coffee shops around Athens, Georgia:
To start us off, Jittery Joe’s is a local favorite and a staple among students at the University of Georgia. Whether you are walking around downtown Athens and need a mid-day pick-me-up or at the MLC and need something to fuel you through that ten-page essay, you can truly never go wrong with a classic Jittery Joe’s orange cup of coffee.
1000 Faces Coffee is also loved by all who have tried it and it’ll keep you coming back. Whether you discover their coffee at the Athens Farmers Market or at their coffee shop located on North Thomas Street, not only will you love the coffee but feel right at home with the atmosphere. The kindness and warm environment that the workers exude is something that I found exceptionally unique. 1000 Faces is the perfect spot to grab your daily cup of coffee or meet up with friends to catch up.
Bitty and Beau’s has just arrived in Athens but we are already loving everything about Bitty and Beau’s. Not only do we love the coffee and yummy treats but the people there are what makes the coffee shop so special. Bitty and Beau’s employ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are systemically unemployed across the United States. As soon as you walk into the shop, you feel the love that everyone there exudes and it puts a smile on your face. I can’t speak highly enough about this incredible coffee shop!
Hendershot’s is a UGA favorite to grab coffee in the morning or listen to live music at night. UGA Panhellenic even hosted a Midterms Coffee morning at Hendershot's earlier this semester. My friends love to get work done at Hendershot’s or even just hang out and sip coffee there together. If you’re looking for a new spot that’s a little bit different from what you are used to - definitely try Hendershot's!
Located right in College Square, across, from the arch, Walkers Coffee Shop is the perfect spot to get your caffeine fix. Whether you want to sit inside and work or outside and enjoy the weather, they have everything at Walkers. It’s location and yummy coffee make it the perfect spot for all students.
Iron Works Coffee is located in the Foundry and the Graduate Hotel here in Athens. This is one of our member’s favorite spots to grab a coffee and grind out all their work on any given afternoon. If you ever need a spot with good vibes and good coffee, Iron Works is your go to spot!
Located in Five Points, and a short walk down Milledge, you will find The Cafe on Lumpkin. The beautiful 1900’s home will catch your eye and the warm atmosphere of the restaurant will draw you in. This is the perfect spot to grab coffee and brunch to catch up with your friends or study for a test. Not a coffee lover? No problem! The Cafe on Lumpkin is also known for its extensive tea list and afternoon tea at the cafe is one of the best ways to spend your day.
Also located right down Lumpkin, is one of my personal favorites, Nedzas. Their lattes are not only so yummy but their latte art is just beautiful. Something extremely special about Nedzas is that with everything you order, you receive a special compliment and it is definitely going to brighten your day. Their back porch is one of my favorite places to do work in Athens and I’d recommend it to everyone!
So, as we approach finals season, and if you’re looking for a new spot to grab a coffee and study or grab a decaf to wind down, I’d highly recommend any of these Athens spots! Let us know if you try any of these coffee shops - we’d love to know your favorites!
