Spring Break for Stronger Girls
Spring Break: the promise of no schoolwork and lots of sunshine spark plans months in advance. Members of Gamma Phi Beta adventured across the U.S. and the globe: from Brussels to Boston to the Bahamas. There was skiing in Colorado and swimming in Florida, but one group of Gamma Phis made Spring Break 2k16 one to remember for a very special reason. These girls traveled to Jamaica with the Wesley Foundation for a mission trip, and two of the freshman shared their experience abroad.
Abby Darling journeyed to St. Ann’s where her group reached out to local schools and churches. In addition to painting buildings, mixing cement, and building a women’s shelter, Abby had the opportunity to spend time with the kids in the community. On the south side of the island, Tracey Dee Heath worked with her group in Mandeville. She spent her week in Jamaica painting Rose Hill primary school, building a home for a family whose house was destroyed by a hurricane a few years ago, and restoring a house on the base they stayed on. The children they met showed both girls as much love and joy as they strove to show them.
Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropy is Girls on the Run, a program dedicated to teaching young girls life-long skills and confidence to overcome any obstacle. These sisters brought Gamma Phi’s mission of building strong girls to Jamaica, and we are so proud of them for spending their spring break helping those who need it the most.
