Recruitment… As told by our favorite songs

It’s that time of year again. Panhellenic Recruitment 2015 has arrived at the University of Georgia. As a blue-vest-wearing, music-loving Gamma Chi, I wanted to offer a list of songs that fully capture the spirit of Recruitment.

Round 1, Day 1… You walk into your first house calmly waiting for the round to begin, and then BAM girls run out from all corners chanting songs of sorority cheer. What song comes to mind for this overwhelmingly exciting moment -- the first ever moment you experience during recruitment?

Yes, I did in fact think the first house I visited as a Potential New Member was going to blow… and I LOVED it. So take in that first experience; go insane, throw some glitter, make it rain.

Round 1, Day 2… Eleven events have been conquered during day one. It is now day two, and you are practically a recruitment expert. Six more events to go, and you will be done with round one - it is so close YOU CAN TASTE IT. 18+ hours have been dedicated to just round one, and here you are in the final hours. What is more appropriate than belting the “Final Countdown” at the top of your lungs as you walk down Milledge to that seventeenth event?

Round 2, House Tours… A new day, a new round! It is finally time to explore all of those beautiful houses lining Milledge and Lumpkin. Of course, the TV show that comes to mind with the touring beautiful houses is the infamous MTV Cribs; however, I think of a specific song performed by the one and only 90s hip hop group, House of Pain. No, these houses are not “of pain”; but they are actually full of beautifully designed rooms and energetic active members that are ready to show you where you could potentially be living with all your best friends.

You came to get down, so get out your seats, and JUMP around those wonderful houses.

Round 3, Philanthropy Round… Back in the ancient days of when I went through Recruitment, this was Skit Round when sororities did their best Kristen Wiig impersonations in Saturday Night Live-inspired performances. That was all replaced with Philanthropy Round where sororities get a chance to show you what they are really all about — the different organizations they fundraise for throughout the year. It “ain’t about the money”, it’s about the incredible differences each of these sororities are making in their community and around the country and how you could be a part of that difference.

Round 4, Preferential Round… IT’S THE LAST ROUND OF RECRUITMENT! Pref round is a time for reflecting on your journey through Recruitment so far. It is also when you want to look to the future and ask yourself, “Where do I picture myself for the next four years? Where am I going to make lifelong friends? Where is my future home?” Edward Sharep says it right…

Home is wherever you are with the people you love, and you are sure to finally find that place after five days of crazy emotions, lots of walking, and memories you’ll still be talking about years later.

BID DAY… You are standing in a circle with your fellow Gamma Chi group members. You can feel the edges of a small card in your hand. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1. You flip over your card and there it is. The place you’ve been destined to end up all along; where a bus is about to take you to be greeted by 200 screaming girls so excited to welcome you to your new home. So it’s time to…

You made it through recruitment. You found your home and now it is time to start school and experience your first ever sorority socials, formals, and all other fun events. Enjoy your time here in the Classic City. It will be over before you know it!
