Crawfish For A Cause

On Thursday, April 13th, Kappa Kappa Gamma will bring a taste of New Orleans to Milledge Avenue with their annual Crawfish Boil benefiting a local nonprofit, Books for Keeps. Starting at 5:30pm there will be a plentiful spread of fresh crawfish, potatoes, sausage and corn. Not only will there be delicious food, but live music as well. The band A.F.T.M., led by sophomore Forrest Whitlark, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, will be preforming all of the classics on the front porch as the sun goes down. Tickets can be purchased from a Kappa for $10 or at the door for $12.

The best part about this event is that all of the money raised will benefit education in the Athens community. Clarke County is one of the poorest counties in the state of Georgia, with 30 percent of the population living in poverty, including children. These children attend schools where both Athens locals and UGA students can encourage education through various mentoring, tutoring and after school programs. However, outside of school, many have little to no access to reading materials. Because of this, during summer break they experience a significant learning loss, pushing them back grade levels and

negatively affecting their chances of graduating high school. Books for Keeps, however, works to combat this problem. Throughout the year, they collect high-quality, exciting books to be given

away in May for summer break. This is a strategy proven to have a similar impact to attending summer school, but at a fraction of the cost.

Each year Kappa Kappa Gamma contributes significantly to this mission through fundraising events like the Crawfish Boil, and by attending your presence can help to impact one child’s life. In addition, all donations, small or large, can be made by here. In 2016, Kappa Kappa Gamma raised $44,000 for Books for Keeps. With the help of family, friends, and the local Athens community, they hope to double that figure this year. Join Kappa Kappa Gamma on

April 13th from 5:30pm-7:30pm to help make that possible!
